Flow Festival’s Balloon 360° presents music legends and irresistible rhythms

Flow Festival’s iconic Balloon 360° presents the finest in rhythm music from across the world. The stage will showcase the Brazilian legend Hermeto Pascoal, Tomorrow Comes The Harvest, led by techno pioneer Jeff Mills, the New York-based soft rock band Infinity Song, the pioneer of Nigerian disco Oby Onyioha, and many more. Domestic names include the jazz group The Five Corners Quintet, celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album.

The Balloon 360° stage, with its sphere-shaped form, became an instant landmark for Flow Festival when it was introduced in 2012 as a result of an international architecture competition hosted by EASA. The venue has since gained fame for its stellar program that exhibits top artists from genres around the world. This year continues the story, as the venue presents a living legend of Brazilian music, composer and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal. With over 10,000 compositions and numerous accolades, Pascoal is one of the most important musicians of our time whose creativity knows no boundaries.

Balloon will also host the pioneer of Detroit techno, Jeff Mills, with his Tomorrow Comes The Harvest project. The improvisation-based group, in which rhythms and cultures merge, originated as a collaboration between Mills and the Afrobeat legend Tony Allen. The power of music is also served in the holy trinity of funk, disco, and gospel, preached by Arp Frique & Perpetual Singers. American tones of rhythm music are displayed by the New York-based soft rock band on the rise, Infinity Song, and the Los Angeles-based instrumental trio LA LOM, with their guitar-led cumbia.

Different forms of African rhythms are presented by the pioneer of Nigerian disco Oby Onyiona with DJ-producer Sai Galaxy, and Ghanaian Florence Adooni, whose work draws from the West African Fra Fra culture. Tarta Relena, a duo that combines Catalan traditional songs with electronics, and the Copenhagen-based jazz group ALAWARI will also bring their intriguing regional sounds to the stage.

Domestic top names include the jazz group The Five Corners Quintet, making a temporary comeback by celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album Chasin’ The Jazz Gone By, the striking jazz quartet Superposition led by drummer Olavi Louhivuori, and the superb collaboration between rap artist Hassan Maikal and the 18-member Sointi Jazz Orchestra. Furthermore, the stage also showcases ethno artist Vilma Jää, the contemporary afrobeat group Frankosun and the Family, the rising star of Finnish soul Emilia Sisco & Northern Lights, and Wishamalii, who combine Arabic modes with Nordic aesthetics.
