Saimaa
Saimaa is a distinctive gem of Finnish music, celebrated for its boundary-pushing artistry. Led by Matti Mikkola, the band first gained wide recognition in 2014 with the album Pepe & Saimaa, a collaboration with Finnish music legend Pepe Willberg. Willberg, a beloved vocalist with a career spanning over six decades, is considered one of Finland’s most iconic artists. On this album, his timeless voice seamlessly blended with the band’s modern and ambitious arrangements, earning widespread acclaim and the Emma Award for Album of the Year—a milestone in Finnish music history.
In 2024, Saimaa released two critically acclaimed albums, Vol. 6 and Vol. 7. Both received five-star reviews from major Finnish media outlets such as Helsingin Sanomat and Soundi. Drawing inspiration from classic rock, prog, folk, and schlager, the albums manage to sound fresh and unique. The addition of new vocalists Unna Kortehisto, Liisa Anastasiadis, Nelli Saarikoski, and Kimmo Härmä adds depth and richness to the band’s sound.
Saimaa’s music bridges the past and the present, blending tradition and innovation. The band’s compositions and arrangements showcase extraordinary creativity and precision, yet their core remains profoundly emotional. Saimaa carves its own deliberate path in Finnish music—and does so with undeniable style.
